Why this programme exists
A child who falls out of school does not simply return. They come back behind, and a classroom built for their age has no room for where they actually are.
India's schools were never short of willing children. They were short of a bridge: something a teacher, a volunteer, or an Anganwadi worker could pick up on a Monday morning and use to bring a nine-year-old from nothing to school-ready, without a curriculum background and without a laboratory.
SLATE is that bridge. Simple Learning Activities to Think and Empower. It was built by a teacher who watched children written off as slow when they had only been absent, and it works in the rooms those children are actually in.
India will shine if all its children are skilled, not just a privileged few.

How it works
You supply the children, the room and one facilitator. We supply everything that facilitator needs to teach, including the training to do it.

You bring
Four things. That is the whole requirement.
The children
Aged 8 to 12. Any number, from a single small group upward. There is no minimum cohort size.
A room
Any space you already teach in. Bridge needs no equipment at all; Digital needs working computers.
One facilitator
A teacher, a volunteer or an Anganwadi worker. No curriculum background and no teaching qualification required.
Hindi or English
The two languages the materials are produced in today.

40 weeks of daily plans for Bridge, or 8 weeks for Digital. Written to be picked up and taught the same morning.

Questions we are asked
What does SLATE cost?
There is a per-child cost, because every child receives printed worksheets and materials. The figure depends on your track and cohort size, and it is confirmed in writing on the fit call before you commit to anything. Nothing is added afterwards. For CSR-funded cohorts we can prepare the costing as a fundable line item.
Do we need a trained teacher?
No. SLATE was built for volunteers, Anganwadi workers and staff without a curriculum background. The facilitator training and written guides are part of what you receive, and the lesson plans are written to be picked up and taught the same morning.
Is there a minimum number of children?
No minimum. We work with small grassroots groups and with cohorts of several hundred. Tell us your number on the form and we will scale the materials to it.
Which languages are the materials in?
Hindi and English. If you need another language, say so on the form and we will tell you honestly whether we can support it.
We have no computers. Can we still take part?
Yes. SLATE Bridge needs no devices at all, only a room and a facilitator. SLATE Digital is the track that requires working computers.
How long from enquiry to first session?
It depends on your cohort size and the printing run, and we confirm a date on the fit call. Materials are dispatched to reach you before your agreed start date.
Can our CSR team fund a cohort for another organisation?
Yes, and several partners do exactly this. Choose CSR team on the form and tell us in the notes which organisation or region you want to fund.
