What it builds

Five skills, hidden in a card game

ACE Cards is a highly challenging game that helps consolidate mathematical processes, numbers, combinations and numerical concepts.

1

Number sense

How numbers relate, practised through mental maths and quick recall.

2

Patterns and sequencing

What comes just before, just after, and what repeats. Order is half of maths.

3

Building equations

Putting numbers together to reach an answer: analytical thinking, one card at a time.

4

Focus and attention

Keeping track of every card on the table, turn after turn.

5

Teamwork

Solving together, winning well and losing well, with family or friends.

Why a game

Children practise what they enjoy. A game they ask to play again gives more maths practice than any worksheet they're made to finish.

How it works

Flip, spot, race. The maths happens on the way.

For the maths-shy, the maths-strong, and everyone in between. Two blue cards and the right red answer make a set. Most sets wins.

1
Set up the decks

Shuffle the blue number cards with the wild cards. Turn over one operation card: addition or subtraction sets the mode for the game.

2
Open 12 answer cards

Shuffle the red answer cards and lay 12 face up. Many are clues, not numbers: One Dozen, One Score, 3 Tens 6 Ones.

3
Flip and race

One player flips blue cards into the centre, four open at a time. Everyone races to spot two that make a red answer.

4
Collect sets. Most sets wins

Two blue cards and their red answer make a set of three. A ? card can be any number. Play until the blue cards run out.

In the box

  • 110 cards in all
  • Blue number cards and red answer cards
  • Wild cards marked with ?
  • 2 operation cards: addition and subtraction
  • Instruction leaflet with worked examples
  • Sturdy printed box

Why we made this

One teacher. One scientist.

Vaishali Gupta spent twenty years in education watching bright children decide they were “bad at science”, usually before they were seven, and usually after being handed a worksheet.

The problem was never ability. It was that science arrived as a set of answers to memorise, instead of a question worth chasing.

So she built what she wanted for her own classroom: activities that need no lab, no screen, and no expertise from the adult in the room.

Every order funds the SLATE Program. 5% of what you spend puts learning materials into the hands of children who would otherwise go without.

Before you ask

Questions parents actually send us

What's different from Level 1?
Level 2 keeps addition and subtraction but adds strategy: more than one step per move, and choices that change the game.
What does a set look like?
In subtraction mode, blue 20 and 8 pair with the red card A Dozen, and 30 and 20 pair with One Score. In addition mode, 4 and 8 make One Dozen.
How many people can play?
One to four players, on their own or as teams, from age 4 to 100. It plays like any deck of playing cards, with a twist that makes everyone mathematically and logically sharper. In schools, children play in groups of four.
Does it build more than maths?
Yes. The leaflet maps it to 21st century skills: critical thinking, creativity, focus, collaboration, communication, flexibility and scientific temper, alongside number sense.
My child finds maths hard. Will this help?
It's built for exactly that: low pressure and lots of repetition. The answer matters to the game, not to a mark, so children keep trying.
Can I use these in a classroom?
Yes. Teams of up to four play at once, so every numeracy skill and basic operation gets practised and assessed in the same game. Teachers also use the games as formative assessments.
Will adults enjoy it too?
Yes. For children it builds confidence with numbers. For adults it is a proper brain workout, and nobody goes easy at the table.
