What it builds

The ABCDE of scientific drawing

Not art class. Five drawing habits, printed on the back of every book, that train a child to look carefully.

1

Accurate drawings

Drawing what is really there, not what they expect to see.

2

Bigger drawings

Drawing objects bigger, so every part can be seen and checked.

3

Complete drawings

Finishing a given drawing: a caterpillar, a house, a spider's web.

4

Detailed drawings

Filling in as many details as they can find.

5

Explain with drawings

Using pictures to explain the abstract: how a hinge works, how a bird moves.

Why drawing

Every scientist keeps a notebook. Drawing is how a child learns to see before they learn to measure.

How it works

Look closely. Draw it. Talk about it.

Short, guided activities for a parent and child, using faces, shapes, patterns and everyday things at home.

1
Read the prompt together

Most pages start with 'Ask your child to...'. A parent reads, the child looks, draws and talks.

2
Look closely first

At their own face in a mirror, a bunting pattern, a bird's nest. What is the same, what is different?

3
Complete and colour

Finish the caterpillar by adding 10 sections and count them aloud. Complete and colour 2D and 3D shapes.

4
Talk about it

Theme pages are for picture reading: ask what they can see. Did You Know boxes add a fact to talk about.

In the box

  • Drawing book, 58 pages
  • Guided activities: complete, colour, patterns and finger prints
  • Theme pages for colouring and picture talk
  • Did you know facts
  • Notes for parents in the activities

Why we made this

One teacher. One scientist.

Vaishali Gupta spent twenty years in education watching bright children decide they were “bad at science”, usually before they were seven, and usually after being handed a worksheet.

The problem was never ability. It was that science arrived as a set of answers to memorise, instead of a question worth chasing.

So she built what she wanted for her own classroom: activities that need no lab, no screen, and no expertise from the adult in the room.

Every order funds the SLATE Program. 5% of what you spend puts learning materials into the hands of children who would otherwise go without.

What comes next

Level 1 is where looking starts

Level 1: what they can see. Level 2: what happened before and what comes next. Level 3: the story behind the picture.

Draw Like a Scientist: Complete Bundle (Levels 1, 2 and 3)

Before you ask

Questions parents actually send us

Can a 4-year-old use it?
Yes, with an adult. Most activities start with 'Ask your child to...', so a parent reads and the child looks, draws and talks.
My child says they can't draw. Is this for them?
Yes, especially. It isn't about drawing well. It's about looking carefully. A wobbly drawing with the right details beats a pretty one.
What else do we need?
Pencils and colours of your own (they are not included). Most activities use what is already at home: a mirror, a wooden table, a door, fruit peels.
Does it work with the STEAM cards?
Yes. The cards give children things to observe; the drawing books teach them to record and explain what they saw.
Home or classroom?
Both. In a classroom, each child needs their own book.
What are the theme pages?
Big picture pages to colour and talk about, such as Colours and Shapes, Safety First, and Sun, Moon and Stars. Use them for picture reading: at Level 1 children say what they see, at Level 2 what happened before and what comes next, at Level 3 they weave a story.
