What it builds

Five skills that only grow outdoors

The park becomes a lab. The garden becomes a field site.

1

Sensory awareness

Noticing through every sense: how a bark feels, how a flower smells, what a tree sounds like.

2

Observation and recording

Looking closely, then putting it on paper: drawings, counts, tables and traces.

3

Questioning and reasoning

Why are hives hexagons? How do legs help animals jump? Outdoors, the questions come on their own.

4

Letters and language

Every find linked to a letter, its sound, a colour and a feeling. Nature and literacy together.

5

Calm and focus

Forest bathing: pause, feel, observe. Time outdoors that builds focus and helps with big feelings.

Why outside

Real material is unpredictable. That's exactly what makes children think. Nature teaches, and it heals too.

How it works

Step outside. Use every sense.

Every letter of the alphabet becomes a reason to step outside: find it, feel it, smell it, talk about it and draw it.

1
Go outside together

A park, a garden, a school ground or a balcony plant. No hurry: the book asks for calm, quiet time outdoors.

2
Find something for the letter

Pick up anything that looks like the letter, then paste it or trace it on the page.

3
Touch it, smell it, talk about it

How does it smell? What does it remind them of? There are no wrong answers outdoors.

4
Draw, paste and make

Draw what it feels like, make animals from leaves, take a bark print with a crayon.

Why we made this

One teacher. One scientist.

Vaishali Gupta spent twenty years in education watching bright children decide they were “bad at science”, usually before they were seven, and usually after being handed a worksheet.

The problem was never ability. It was that science arrived as a set of answers to memorise, instead of a question worth chasing.

So she built what she wanted for her own classroom: activities that need no lab, no screen, and no expertise from the adult in the room.

Every order funds the SLATE Program. 5% of what you spend puts learning materials into the hands of children who would otherwise go without.

Before you ask

Questions parents actually send us

My child is 3. Is it too young?
No. Level 1 is built for ages 3 to 6. An adult reads the prompt and the child does the exploring.
We live in a flat with no garden. Will it work?
Yes. A balcony plant, a park, a school ground or a walk down the road all count.
What about rain or heat?
Many activities work from a window or doorway. Rainy days are some of the best for noticing.
Do I need to know the names of plants and birds?
No. Children describe and draw what they see. Names come later, and you can look them up together.
Can schools use these?
Yes. They're built for school grounds and nature walks. Each child needs their own book.
What else do we need?
Crayons or colours, a pencil and some glue. A magnifying glass helps at Level 3. Everything else comes from outside: leaves, flowers, stones and bark.
Is it safe for a small child?
The tips page asks parents to make sure nothing sharp or unsafe is picked up, nothing from the ground is eaten, and hands are washed after every walk.
